Blogging Tips:
Comment Forms - Say NO to CAPTCHA

First off, Please, I'm begging you all, turn off Captcha!!! Disable Captcha for blog comments!! "Like" the Say "NO" to Comment Captcha Facebook Page!

What is Captcha or Word Verification: (Definition from Wikipedia) A CAPTCHA or Captcha is a type of challenge-response test used in computing as an attempt to ensure that the response is not generated by a computer.

So, unless your having problems with spam and you think a computer is generating the spam, then what do you need captcha for? Want a second opinion? Click Here!
It's really annoying when I fill out the log-in info, click "Post Comment", I assume I'm done at this point, but NO the form refreshes and then the Captcha shows up, its a little easier when its at least there to begin with....

If your having problems with spam then you can simply moderate your comments. With this setting, comments will not be posted until you give the OK.
Also, require users to sign-in, do not allow anonymous comments.

I use blogger, any comments on posts older than 30 days are moderated. Also, I do not accept Anonymous comments, people are required to log-in in some way in order to leave a comment. The only time I have ever had a problem with spam was prior to having those two settings in place.
All comments get sent to my email to ensure I read them all and can respond when applicable! Speaking of, would you like other bloggers to be able to reply to to the comments you leave via email? Read this post!

Second, in my opinion, it looks a lot nicer if the comment form is embed below your post. No pop-ups or different pages, the theme and decor of your blog stays in place. Plus, if its below your post, the commenter is forced to scroll down and will see more of what's in your sidebars that they would not see otherwise, Think about that!

UPDATE: You ask, I oblige! A comment was left asking for a instructions, so here it is (I don't know why I didn't think to write instructions in the first place...):

How To on Blogger: (If you have instructions for another blogging platform please let me know and I can link to those as well)
On your Blogger Dashboard, under the name of your Blog, click Settings
Then under the tabs at the top, click the blue word Comments (shown below)
The third option down says Comment Form Placement, this is where you can choose to have your comment form: "Embedded below Post" (my preferred method).

Scroll down to where it says Comment moderation - If this is set to "Always" that means comments will not be posted/visible on your blog until you authorize them to be published. (I have it set to moderate comments older than 30 days)

Below that is Show word verification for comments? (Captcha) - Just Say NO! - Selecting NO will turn off Captcha and make me (and others) happy!

At the bottom is Comment Notification Email - put your email address in that box if you would like to get all comments emailed to you!

DON'T FORGET TO CLICK SAVE! Any questions, just ask! Either leave a comment or you can email me directly!

Totally agree on the captcha thing. I've been blogging for over three years, I've never done captcha nor do I moderate my comments, and I've gotten literally maybe 3 or 4 spam comments ever. It's really not a serious problem and captchas are an unnecessary annoyance!

i agree- but.... i have not been able to find out how to turn it off- i'll keep looking, but if you have an easy "how to" - i'd be happy to follow it! tks-

I recently turned captcha off because I was annoyed by others that use it. I agree that if you don't allow anonymous to comment, it can eliminate spam.

I hate captcha!! Especially when you have to use two or three tries to get it right. UGH
I had the pop up comment on mine because I thought it was better for giveaways, but I like your idea about having people see all of the things that are on your sidebar... makes sense. Thanks for the tip. :)

This is a cool post. I agree. Dislike them. I had one the other day that cracked me up. FLUKK I'm easily entertained, I reckon. LOL

I can't stand it either. But nothing annoys me more than the Wordpress "Slow down, you are posting too quickly" message. Man, that irritates me every time! DON'T tell me what to do LOL :) Happy Wednesday!

Thank you, thank you! I wish more bloggers would do this!

Thanks for doing this. I've often wondered if I even had that turned on. I didn't. Thank goodness!

I agree... that darn thing always pisses me off. I hate when I have to enter them

I think it is kinda a cool to see what weird words it is generating for me to type. But I do need to see if I have mine on. I am not even sure at this point.

I don't necessarily hate Captcha but it's a pain in the arse. I have never used Captcha or moderation and have had very few spam comments ever.

Hip, hip, Hooray!
I'm on dial-up and surf with images turned off so it's a major pain to have to deal with CAPTCHA.
Your post is excellent in saying why it's not useful and how to deal if you do get spammers.
Thank you.

OMG so agree so annoying as well as the your posting to fast messages that wordpress generates!!! UGH so so so annoying.

YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love you! Lol. I have been entering blog giveaways for several months now. I have learned a few things along the way. If a blogger has captcha enabled I won't even bother with their giveaway unless there are very few entry options. I simply don't have the time or patience to sit there and deal with that for the lengthy amount of time it takes out of your day. Ugh. What really burns me up? When a blogger has captcha enabled AND comment moderation. So then I have to do the stinking time consuming captcha AND not be able to see my comment to know where I am on my list if I get lost. Come on. If things are that bad on your blog that you have to protect yourself to that extent, then maybe you should find a new hobby. I cannot imagine someone tormenting your blog to the point where you protect it like the secret service. Lol. I cannot tell you how happy I am to have found this post. A big thank you to Quick Tattletails for opening my eyes to you. Thank you. YOU ROCK!!!!!

I came from Quick Tattletails and I totally agree with the CAPTCHA! It shouldn't be on! It's so hard to enter giveaways to have to type in that. It takes to much time!

This is a GREAT post and you are AMAZING!!! I was soooooooooo thinking that I needed to switch to Wordpress so I could have comments e-mailed to me so I could respoind easier to them!! It takes SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much time to click on the comment, click on e-mail address, copy it then paste it into my yahoo acct in a 'new mssg.' You are amazing and I am going to share this!! Thanks for making my life soooooo mauch easier!!

Good post. You might want to stress the need for moderation on comments on older posts - there have been several cases lately on Blogger where people have been spammed on such posts without realising and Google has pulled their blogs - they are being a bit heavy at the moment.

Gwama Terri said...

I would have more time to comment if everyone would turn it off. And it's so annoying when I get it wrong because I'm too stubborn to wear my glasses all of the time. I liked "say NO to Comment Captcha!

I even allow anonymous comments- only b/c that also allows people to comment with name/url. And Blogger's spam filter catches almost every spam comment. No need for captcha!

thank you! i bitch about this on my twitter ALL THE TIME! UGH! think how many entries on thier giveaways dont get counted because people assume that when it goes to the top of the page they re done and close the window? yes its very annoying, i wanna know wht spam bots are attacking blogger. wthever! go read my twitter feed! @1caseycolette im rotfl at this bc this is a constant source of frustration for me as I try to enter giveaways (plus host them) i have mine turned OFF! I have noticed that bloggers with low number followers usually do it it, but some high number followed blogs too. :/

girl i tried to add this button to the very ^ top of my button love on my blog and you can click it and it brings you here, but it doesnt have the pic above like yours does, it says "photbucket image has been moved or deleted" can you tell me what i am doing wrong? comment on my blog as ill likely forget about this in 10 min and wont check back. if you dont believe me, go to my blog, find the photobucket icon, (on the right sidebar halfway down) click it, it comes to you! let me know if when you fix it, ill remove it tomorrow. :/ i REALLY Wanted that button (lol)

Very helpful post. I have the 'say no to captcha' button at the top of my blog and link to this post whenever I find a blog that has both captcha AND moderation. Thanks

I've had mine off for a long time. I believe it discourages comments. I use the DISQUS comment system now though.

Cindy Carroll said...

See, and as a blog reader I find moderating comments annoying. I'm also only logging in with my Google Account to leave this comment. Usually, if I HAVE to log in using Google, LiveJournal, WordPress, TypePad, etc. I don't bother leaving a comment because I think it's wrong to force people to have one of those accounts in order to comment on a blog post.

I just wrote a blog about this too. I hate them!!!
I am grabbing your button and it is going on my blogs.

LOVE THIS POST! I reposted it on a few things because I think the newer bloggers use them more often than not and it drives me NUTS! Half the time I can't read what the words are and it waste time after I spent commenting on a post. It is frustrating and every time I see one of them I just yell "GRRRRRR!" Thank you for this post and I am going to grab the button as well!

MaeGal (Sarah) said...

Agreed!
There have been plenty of times where I went to leave a comment on someones blog, and when captcha came up it was like, "fine, never mind then". I'm too lazy to waste my time on such things, especially when the comment wasn't all that relevant.
Thank you for this post! =)

Don't like Captcha

♡♥♬ Carolsue ♡♥♬ said...

Oh PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! I hate Captcha -- sometimes I have entered the stupid phrase so many times I just give up. If it's a contest that has tons of entry methods, I only do a couple of them before I get frustrated and give up. I see some that require a simple math problem or something. Why not that?

Carrie said...

I was really hoping to see a captcha down here after I read your post! Just to be funny! LOL I hate captcha as well but I do have a problem with spam... I use SweetCaptcha and I LOVE it!! No typing required just a quick slide this item over to this item! Easy Peasy! I also tried using "Are you human" Which I loved even more but they require you to slide up to 3 items over while they are floating around the screen which I can imagine would be hard for users on their phones or tablets, so that only lasted a day! lol Great post tho! I agree with you 100%!

I use Blogger too but I can't figure out for the life of me how to make sure that Captcha is turned off. My dashboard doesn't look anything like yours.
